Top seed Alexander Zverev expressed skepticism that financial penalties would resolve the issue of prominent players missing from ATP Masters events. This came as the Montreal Masters began on Sunday without several top-ranked competitors, including Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and the injured Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev stated his belief that simply throwing money at the problem won’t address the underlying causes of these absences. He specifically questioned whether sanctions would be effective, even in the case of players like Novak Djokovic, currently ranked number five in the world.
"I honestly don't think so," Zverev added of Djokovic. The comments highlight a growing concern within the sport regarding player participation at key tournaments and suggest that factors beyond financial incentives are influencing athletes’ decisions to compete.
