NMAA Board Approves 'One Free Transfer' Rule for Student Athletes
The New Mexico Activities Association Board of Directors voted on Thursday afternoon to approve the organization's revamped eligibility bylaw, which includes the "one free transfer" rule. The vote passed, though it was not unanimous.
The measure had previously received approval from both the NMAA Commission and the NMAA staff before reaching the Board of Directors. The "one free transfer" rule is a significant component of the revamped eligibility bylaw that has now cleared multiple stages of the approval process.
With the Board of Directors' vote complete, the bylaw now moves to its final step. The decision on implementation will rest with the NMAA's approximately 160 member schools, each of which will have a say in the process. The outcome will ultimately depend on how these schools choose to proceed with the newly approved eligibility framework.
